what is our project?
We are performing Hamlet, one of William Shakespeare’s most iconic and captivating tragedies. We will be performing at the Lemon Grove, 20th-22nd May before touring to the Stratford Playhouse in Stratford-Upon-Avon in June. We will focus on the microcosm of Denmark, placing the play in an ambiguous time frame which emphasises the importance of text.
The production will have a basic set, using six broken mirrors as a backdrop, with the main medium being lighting and sound. We want to explore how modern technology, like projection and moving lights, can be used to dictate the space instead of a traditional set.
Hamlet is a difficult play to tackle, as it has been reproduced many times over the years. We hope to focus on the mental health of the titular character, being sensitive with the topic and truly exploring the drive behind Hamlet respectfully and authentically. Mental Health is an important topic to discuss: as modern research becomes more varied and we begin to understand it in more depth, there has never been a better time to educate the public about its prevalence and effects through the medium of theatre.
Who are we?
We are Exeter University Shakespeare Society. We are a student-run society that performs Elizabethan plays on Campus and beyond. You can find out more about our society here:
We are returning to Stratford-Upon-Avon for the third time, after successful touring productions 'The Merchant of Venice' (2016) and 'Much Ado About Nothing' (2017).
Where will the money go?
All of the money will go towards the production in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and assist in the huge Venue Hire cost that we are faced with. Below are the outgoing costs for our production.
- Stratford Playhouse Venue Hire: £5,495
- Transport for Equipment: £250
- Technical Equipment Hire: £650
- Props / Set: £400
- Posters / Flyers: £90
- Social Media Advertisement: £75
- Costume: £275
If we raise more than our target, all of the money will go towards the production in other areas such as our hired Lighting Equipment or Publicity.
