Building a racing car in just 9 months? A group of passionate students from the University of Exeter are taking on the challenge. Their goal is to design and build a Formula 1- car and compete for the best result at the end of the year at Silverstone. XTV is covering their journey in our XRacing Documentary, our biggest project this year!
Who are you?
We are XTV Online, the University of Exeter's television station, dedicating to making filmmaking accessible for students. Our work covers a range of genres from music videos to dramas and this year we're beginning one of our biggest projects yet- a 9 month long documentary following the highs and lows of the XRacing- Exeter Formula Student team.
Your story
There are various goals we aim to achieve with this project.First, we want to create opportunities for our members. As a filmmaking society, we aim to provide as many filmmaking opportunities as possible. Previously, we focused mainly on short films. However, to enhance diversity in the filmmaking experience, we decided to produce a 30-minute long documentary. This project will involve a large creative team throughout the entire production process, from writing to editing.
On the other hand, this project will help build up our resources in documentary and develop a new filmmaking choice for our members. Meanwhile, to enhance our creative output, we decided to use some of the funds to upgrade our society's equipment in order to reduce limitations.
Second, showcase the student society, Xracing. Although Xracing is a Formula 1 student society at the university, the way they operate is quite different from other sports societies. They build their car using their resources. We want this documentary to share their story with a wider audience, including university students and the public. The documentary will explore their relationship with the local community and businesses in Exeter, explaining why these entities choose to support the students. It will also uncover the challenges and joys behind the car-building process, leading up to the final result shown at the Silverstone competition.
Thirdly, to promote the university. Although we are creating a 30-minute documentary focused on one student society, it still serves as a great way to showcase our university and highlight aspects of student life, when it is released on our YouTube channel. Additionally, we are hoping to submit this documentary to film festivals, to reach out with a wider group of audiences and gain professional opinions from the film festivals.
Where will the money go?
All money donated will go to covering the costs of the documentary, including filming equipment, transport and accommodation.

Help us succeed!
Overall, this project could help build a stronger connection with the Exeter community, students, and the university. As this documentary have open up a new door for our members, we believe in the future, the growth of documentaries could also offer a new way to listen to the thoughts of our students and society, creating a bridge for communication, opportunities, and diversity.
