The Manan Shah Memorial Prize was launched in 2024 in memory of our alumnus, Manan Shah, who graduated in 2023 and sadly passed away the same year. Manan was passionate about volunteering and made a significant impact on our local communities through his work in the Law Clinic and the Guild.
The Manan Shah Memorial Prize was established by Manan’s friends and family to celebrate his legacy. It is open to all international Exeter Law School students in any year of the LLB degree (including both LLB and graduate LLB students) who can evidence a sustained commitment to volunteering in the community, either within or beyond the Law School.
The value of the Prize is £500 per year, currently awarded to one student for five years. All donations made through this page will extend the Prize's scope, and we invite all those who knew Manan to contribute to carry on his legacy.
About Manan
Manan Shah completed his second year of the LLB program at the University of Exeter. In 2019, Manan graduated from Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada) with a Bachelor's of Arts (Hons.) in Law and Legal Studies.
At the end of his first year, Manan was elected as the new BAME Officer (later renamed to the Cultural Competency Officer) of the University of Exeter Law Society. A role he worked at over his second year, where he helped with the Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee to make policy changes rather than push for performative action.
He also spent time at the University of Exeter and at Carleton University working on mooting. At the University of Exeter, he was a finalist in the first moot of the school year. Manan was a captain of the Carleton University Undergraduate Mooting Team in 2018/2019 as well as a judge for the Osgoode Cup National Undergraduate Mooting Tournament and the Capital Cup Mooting Tournament in 2020. We are proud to count Manan as an Exeter alumnus, and a valued member of both the Law School and the Students' Guild.
Colleagues in the Law School and the Law Clinic have spoken fondly of Manan’s contribution to Exeter's community and the co-Directors of the Law Clinic, Kim McDonald and Natasha Bellinger, have said: “We were fortunate enough to have Manan as a part of our law clinic. Manan was committed to helping his clients and making a positive impact. It was a pleasure to spend time with Manan and watch him develop his skills. He had such a lovely way about him and his kindness was infectious to clients, staff and students alike. He is greatly missed.”
Manan was also Academic Communities and Representation Coordinator at the Students' Guild. He was a firm believer in continuing education and his journey was characterized by academic drive, a vibrant spirit, and a profound dedication to legal studies.
