Support the launch and ongoing development of our short story anthologies!

We are looking to raise £600 to contribute to the publication costs, author's fees, art & design, launch event, and the printing of Riptide Volume 11. This will ensure our latest edition comes into the world with a bang!

What is Riptide?

Riptide is a short story journal that Sally Flint and Virginia Baily, both authors and Exeter alumni, set up nearly 10 years ago.  We are about to publish our 11th anthology of new writing. We also have a fantastic team of student volunteers who help at all stages of the editorial process and gain valuable work experience as a result.

Our ambition is to champion the short story, pay the selected authors a fee for their work and to publish new talent alongside more established writers. Over the years we have had contributions from Michael Morpurgo, Michael Rosen, Helen Dunmore, Joanne Harris, Tessa Hadley, Julia Copus, Philip Hensher, John Burnside, Adam Marek and more . We receive submissions from all over the globe, and we have also been the first publishers of new writers who have gone on to achieve success. This latest volume is no exception and we have 18 stories by authors such as Jane Rogers , whose novel The Testament of Jessie Lamb was long listed for the Booker and won the Arthur C Clark Award, and whose new novel is out this month, Robert Shearman , an Exeter alumnus, multi-award winning story writer and Doctor Who script-writer, and Jane Feaver , who teaches Creative Writing here at the University of Exeter, and is the author of three prize-nominated books.

Why do we need your support?

Riptide is mostly self-funding – we use the money from the book sales to pay for production costs and to pay the authors. The editors and the students give their time for free.  While we have received a few grants and pockets of funding over the years, we want Riptide to grow and become a leader in the field of short story telling. This is what this crowdfunding campaign is about. There are not many publishing outlets for good short stories and we want to be able to continue to grow – it’s important for writers, especially those at the start of their writing journey, and it’s great for the readers too! The students who work with us build up their cvs, learn a wide variety of skills and get valuable work experience. What we do is important not just in literary terms, but also in social and student employability terms too.

What will your support enable us to do?

Raising £250 would enable us to hold the book launch, which in itself will generate further income due to book sales. This would also contribute towards authors' fees.

Raising a fantastic £600 will enable us to print more books and distribute them widely to bookshops in the region, and beyond!

We will keep you updated as the project develops, so keep your eyes peeled and become a helper for regular updates!

Our rewards include previous Riptide editions, t-shirts, novels and artwork - check them out and please do support as much as you can. We know that not everyone can support us with money, but we would really appreciate it if you could share this campaign - it will make a big difference to the future of this book!
