Hubbub is the University of Exeter’s crowdfunding platform, showcasing some of our most exciting projects, allowing alumni and friends of the university to support causes that particularly appeal to them, whilst at the same time helping our university community to find the funding they need for their creative and innovative projects.

What is Crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is sponsorship by a crowd of many donors, each making an individual donation in return for a small reward, for example a project poster, t-shirt or ticket to a show. This platform allows projects to showcase to a potentially huge audience, and gives supporters an easy way to donate.

What kind of projects are suitable?

Projects are created by students, staff and alumni who are looking to raise money for University activity. They can be about anything - but should focus on the benefit they will provide to students, the University, or the wider community. It should be noted however that this is a platform to raise money for University of Exeter projects, so unfortunately we cannot support requests to fundraise for external charities.

We review all projects for suitability, judging them on the quality of the presentation of the projects, their goals, and the level of organisation and commitment demonstrated by the teams behind them.

If you support a project, you will automatically receive updates about it. You can also interact directly with the team behind the project by leaving a comment on the project, or sending them a message.

How Do I Create a Project?

If you are a student, staff member or alumni with an idea for an exciting fundraising project, we would love to hear from you! Simply login and enter a few key details: a description of what you want to do, a fundraising target and completion date, and some rewards that you can provide in return for pledges. Images and videos will also bring your project to life, so we suggest you be as creative as possible! The most successful projects are those who are active on social media or have a supporting audience in order to aid the crowdfunding process and further the reach of their fundraising message.

We offer advice, tips, and feedback all along the way, so do get in touch if you have any questions – annualfund@exeter.ac.uk.

Are there any fees?

There are some processing fees, but any Gift Aid we are able to claim on donations will be given directly back to the project and so in the majority of cases, Gift Aid covers all of these charges, meaning that projects receive everything they raise.

All-or-Nothing Funding?

Some projects work on an all-or-nothing basis meaning that it must achieve its minimum needed by its completion date or no funds change hands. Why? Part of the appeal of crowdfunding is that sponsors get to engage with projects and see where their money is going. This keeps everyone happy! As a supporter, you will make a pledge to give a donation and payment will only be taken at the point where the project achieves its target. As a project lead, it is your job to promote your project among your networks and groups to ensure that it reaches its goal.

However, some projects decide not to set a minimum target, in which case they will receive everything they raise.
