Help Us Build Exeter’s First Electric Race Car

Who We Are

We are XElectric, the University of Exeter’s first fully electric Formula Student team.

We are a student-led group of engineers, business students and creatives working together to design, build and race a fully electric single-seater car at Formula Student UK at Silverstone.

This project is not coursework. It is not a simulation. It is a real race car, built from the ground up by students.

What Is Formula Student?

Formula Student UK is one of Europe’s largest engineering competitions, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Each year, over 100 universities compete at Silverstone Circuit. Teams must:

  • Design a complete electric race car
  • Manufacture and assemble every system
  • Pass strict safety inspections
  • Compete in acceleration, endurance and efficiency events
  • Present a professional business case

This competition is widely recognised by motorsport and automotive companies as a benchmark for future engineers.

Why This Matters

We are not just building a car. We are building:

  • Hands-on engineering experience
  • Electric vehicle innovation
  • Sustainable material research
  • Leadership and professional skills
  • A long-term electric motorsport legacy at Exeter

Our team includes students from multiple disciplines and international backgrounds. Around one third of our leadership positions are held by women, well above the UK engineering average.

We are building something bigger than racing. We are building opportunity.

Our Engineering Vision

XElectric focuses on:

  • High-performance electric powertrain systems
  • Battery safety and energy management
  • Sustainable composite materials such as hemp and flax
  • Full system integration and validation
  • Professional project governance

We are exploring environmentally responsible materials while maintaining performance standards required at the competition level.

Every component is designed, analysed and tested by students.

Where Your Donation Goes

Building an electric race car is expensive. Your support directly funds:

  • Battery cells and high-voltage components
  • Inverters, motors and control systems
  • Carbon fibre and sustainable composite materials
  • CNC machining and manufacturing costs
  • Safety equipment and compliance testing
  • Transport and competition entry at Silverstone
Every contribution moves us closer to putting a student-built electric car on track.

Why We Need You

As a first-year electric team, we are establishing our foundations. We are building safely, responsibly and with long-term ambition.

Corporate sponsors support us, but crowdfunding allows:

  • Friends and family to be part of our journey
  • Alumni to support the next generation
  • Supporters of sustainable engineering to contribute
  • Motorsport enthusiasts to invest in future talent

This is a community effort.

Be Part of the Story

If you donate, you are not just giving money.
