What is this?
The Truro Prehospital and Emergency Medicine Society (PHEMSoc) will be hosting a weekend of events for all those interested in emergency medicine by bringing together the major emergency services in a first of its kind event in Cornwall.
our story
Since September, our new Committee has hit the ground running by planning new innovative events and facilitating exciting collaborations.
In October, our members took part in scenarios with Falmouth Fire and Rescue and the South West Ambulance Service Trust (SWAST). This allowed our members to learn about interagency cooperation, practical skills involved in extrication and to get stuck in with innovative scenarios. The scenarios involved a patient stuck in a car following a collision and a patient removed from a burning building. All of which were excellent learning opportunities.
Similarly, our members also worked with paramedicine and medical students from Plymouth in a day of wilderness medicine scenarios in Dartmoor. This was an exciting opportunity where members learned about managing critically ill patients in remote areas, improvisation and planning for extrication.
Looking forward to the coming months, we have many exciting events for our members:
- South Crofty Mine mass casualty scenario - Our members have been invited to act as simulated patients at a mass casualty scenario in the soon to reopen South Crofty mine
- Cornwall air ambulance base tour - We have organised a tour of the Cornwall Air Ambulance base in Newquay for our members to improve their knowledge surrounding Helicopter Emergency Medicine (HEMS) in the field of PHEM.
- Southern Wild Trials - PHEMSoc is sending a team to compete in a wilderness medicine competition against the major Southern universities in a series of challenging scenarios
- Penryn Emergency Medicine Weekend - Our exciting weekend will bring together major organizations involved in emergency medicine in Cornwall for an innovative event benefiting students, Doctors, organizations and all others who attend.
Where will your money go?
Put simply, your money will go to the running of our event. We need to purchase many services for this event to come to life. This includes room bookings, food, security, first aid cover, travel and much more.
Your funding will help usher in a new generation of students keen on pursuing and involving themselves in emergency medicine. It will also create opportunities for Cornwall’s best and brightest doctors, medical students and staff to work with and learn from each other in their own community to benefit Cornwall’s residents.
